Nicole looked at the Academy with its brand new sign, the Captain Ivan Younger Institute named for her father, the Captain of the USS Yellowstone lost to the Borg during the conflict.
She should have been very proud but instead she thought of the Nancy Branson Academy of Medara. The academy was a beautiful facility that looked more like an opera house than a school. This was an oversized dome which the students often referred to as the Igloo. Most of them felt cold not only from the weather of Reykja Penthe but from the school itself.
Nicole looked at the faces of the students coming into the school. They looked more like they were headed into a prison and not to a school to replenish staff on the legendary vessels of the King's Fleet. Nicole thought back to her first exposure to the Academy of Commodore Jake Anderson in the Omega Fleet. She was so excited to get to try command simulators, fly shuttles and do more than create quilted awards.
These kids had lost that glow. The King's Fleet had lost that glow. She needed to figure out how to get some flare back in the Academy. She was slumped down on the stoop trying to cover up her head with the parka. She looked up to see a young tactical officer; a stunning young Tellarite.
Nicole gave a little smile. Velvet Sanders was following her up the stairs. She looked at Nicole, knowing her history with the Tellarites, "Sweetie, you don't want no part of that one, her father was Admiral Jaskal Naar'Haaj."
Nicole smiled. She had not felt like that since Betsy left. It was nice to feel alive again.
