The Rear Admiral had been charged with a large number of things by taking on the leadership of the some 13 million inhabitants of the Omega Planet, known as Omega Prime. Officer Robert E. Leo could not help but basque in the respect the citizenry had for the new commander, the Mayor of Omega City.
Anderson had opened up the planet to colonization and had built a virtual paradise including the awesome Omega City. Many Bajorans displaced by the Cardassian Colonization and had lived in refugee camps for nearly 10 years were unable to return to Bajor. The Bajorans continued to reproduce in the camps and Bajor by many standards is a small planet and its resources had been horribly depleted by the Cardassian Occupation. These people were left around the Quadrant. The opportunity presented, nearly 10 years after the Occupation had ended, by the Omega Planet could prove to be incredible. Anderson had built a university, many school and a Star Fleet Academy on Omega Prime.
Though processing a large group of refugees with minimal or no paperwork beyond their refugee diaries was often painful and slow, to see the tears of these children, many have whom have only known deserts of the former Maquis worlds as they leave Central Command and see the gorgeous Omega City is worth every delay. One of the Bajoran children ran up and hugged me and whispered "Thank you, big kitty".
I could not help myself, salty tears stained my fur and dripped onto my dress uniform. I knelt down, whipping her tears with my thumb, "No sweetie, you thank Admiral Anderson. He has done this. He is the hero of the region right now. Will you do that for me?"
"Yes, sir.", she replied. I rubbed her hair as her mother and father exited the building. Her father shook my hand rapidly. I smiled, trying to slow the handshake.
I thought to myself. This is a good place.
I walked inside the Central Command and up to the Mayor's Office. I knocked softly and entered. Anderson was feverishly working on PADDs trying to keep nearly 13 million people straight. I bowed my head.
Jake smiled, "Welcome, Officer Leo. Welcome."
I looked over at the mayor, "Thank you, your eminence. I will try to serve the public good as best as I can."
Jake laughed, "I am certain you will, Robert."
I was taken aback when he called me by my first name. "Mr. Mayor, this is going to be a good place. I am at your service. Let me know if I can be of any assistance."
Jake smiled once more. He had a welcoming personality. He was ideal for the role. The Bajoran Refugees he welcomed already see him as a hero. He is being called "Gift of the Prophets".
I nodded and slowly back out of the room. I walked downstairs and was shocked to see a colony ship, the CGV Ikavaa Nor bringing Cardassians to Omega Prime. I expected Black Uniforms and fierce looking warriors, instead it was women and children dressed in browns and soft tans and clinging to Hebetian imagery. They had been displaced by the rise of the new Cardassian Military Government in the Cestus system. The women looked bewildered and lost.
I saw a young Bajoran girl, about 12 years old walk up and grab one of the women by the hand and lead her to the station where Omega Fleet staff were processing refugee claims. She looked up at the Cardassian. She had never seen them at their worst. To her the war and occupation was only a legend. She looked up and told the woman who was so lost and crying, "You need to stand in this line. These people will help you."
I had to go outside. I needed fresh air. My eyes were tearing up. This is truly going to be a special place in the Omega Fleet Protected Territory.
