Boston, the Bajoran center on the Phoenix Colony has always been a special place from its peaceful formation and only "dead" Omega molecule research having begun its work after the Covington Covenant to the Outpost 294 historical site. The city, under the authority of Dr. Ro Anora has been a beacon to the rebellion against the Romulan Oppression.
The citizens, predominantly Bajoran displaced during the occupation by Cardassia. They were not about to give up another city. The Romulans never expected any resistance from the scientific research city. Were they ever in for a surprise. The Bajorans not only hunkered down but they handed the Romulans their first defeats in the war of occupation.
The trouble is that victory was four days earlier. The Bajorans were hunkered in in protection of their city but the Romulans can restaff. The Romulans can reinforce. The Romulans can have wave after wave.
Nicole and Vincent knew it was only a matter of time before Boston fell to the territory government of Vorta'Romulus. Dr. Ro had been calling for reinforcements. The truth is there would be none. Dr. Ro could also get no viral weaponry. Boston was too remote. The city needed a miracle.
Wendy Smith is most famous for her doctorate disertation at the Omega Academy. She then became the curator for the Outpost 294 recovery site and was in Boston during the occupation. Wendy had made a bizarre discovery in her research of the original Captain Tim Veltkamp outpost site. There are bizarre readings and a temporal rift that existed even prior to the discovery of the Vreenak Vortex above the colony.
This temporal rift is believed related to a 2160 incident involving a First Federation Ship known as the USS Lexington. The incident, called the Lexington Lexicon, saw the famous vessel pass above the colony when Captain Veltkamp was there in 2376. Veltkamp sang the praises of its legendary Captain, James Shackleford telling of his legend to this day in the Village.
The Lexington had made three other flybys over the outpost since 2376. The stories were stuff of legend. Students in the Omega Academy would often claim to have seen the ship. Vigils were made by students out to the site even before the Bajorans arrived as everyone wanted to see the ghost ship.
It is funny how things work out sometimes. The Bajoran Militia, embattled and about to lose moral were facing an advancing Romulan force, great in number and in droves. The Militia was about to break battle lines, about to lose the war and the city when the sky opened up into massive cloud cover, as if something had broken the upper atmosphere.
The Bajorans turned, led by Dr. Ro Anora and looked to the stars. The Romulans had never heard of the Lexington but the Bajorans, many of whom had attended the Omega Academy or worked at Outpost 294. Wendy Smith loves the legend. She is always telling the story.
The Romulans had no warning. There was no tracking a temporal invasion. The Lexington buzzed the battle field. The Romulans nearly killed themselves in retreat, bouncing over one another. The Bajorans were able to drive them back. No one will ever know if Commodore James Shackleford saw Wendy Smith climb out of the bunker and wave to the Lexington but she stood there, tears streaming down her cheeks having actually seen it.
There will be ever more students who make the pilgrimmage to Outpost 294 in the hopes of seeing the phantom ship. This will forever mark another pass of the legendary "flying dutchman" and its influence on the resistance may never be truly measured.
Every student will want to come out here to see if they too can catch a glimpse of the Lexington Lexicon...
