Nicole and Amy went for coffee. Amy had come to grips with her feelings. She told Nicole that she did not want to be a part of being in any "homosexual" relationship. Amy told Nicole that she was mistaken in believing that what they shared in leading up to the Marathon was anything more than coach and athlete.
Amy told Nicole it was so cliched for a female athlete to be in a lesbian relationship with her coach. Nicole cried but she listened. She left after picking up a bottle of Chardonnay on off sales from Bobbi-Lee.
Bobbi-Lee joked that "Nicole was unfit to command the colony." The guests laughed knowing the reference to the writing of Christine T'Nley. Amy was deeply hurt by the comment and the laughter. Nicole may be a lot of things but she is what makes the colony functional.
Amy followed Nicole home, staying far enough back to remain unnoticed. She stopped at the end of the Cul De Sac and watched as Nicole walked slowly up to her stoop and sat down and cried. Nicole fumbled with the bottle, unable to get the cork out. It only made things worse. She cried and held the bottle to her chest. She fumbled with her keys in sheer tears trying to get the corkscrew out.
To make matters worse, it started to rain. Nicole's keys fell to the ground. She fumbled in the mud knocking keys into the roses on her front flower garden. She turned over and stumbled into the mud. The bottle rolled down the grass. Amy pained inside watching Nicole fumbling around trying to get her keys.
She wanted to walk away. She should have walked away. She could not help herself. She picked up the bottle and walked up and helped Nicole to her feet. She stood there, soaking wet from the rain. She picked up the keys and opened the bottle taking a big drink and handing it to Nicole.
Nicole looked at her, "I thought you did not want any part of this."
"I don't think that I do, Nikki.", Amy replied, "but that does not mean I don't care."
Nicole drank back the wine and then leaned towards Amy searching for a kiss. Amy pulled back, stepping backward. Nicole began crying once more and headed up the stairs. She opened the door before looking back. Amy stood there in the rain and then slowly climbed up the stairs stealing a little peck on the lips. She turned to scurry away when Nicole jumped down and grasp her in a hug.
A thousand images rushed through their head...
Amy followed Nicole into her Suburban house...
