Nicole's specialty has always been her ability to get things from the Federation. She is one of the finest traders in the civil service. She however has been out of the loop while recouperating her spirits after the embarrassment of the Montgomery Show Trial which clearly showed her shortcomings.
Vincent called her at home when the weekly shipments did not arrive. Nicole came in and began shouting at civil servant after civil servant until she was told that the Federation does not see the Phoenix Colony as a viable colony and is beginning to shift its support to other colonies in the region.
The civil service began citing incident after incident and even informed Vice Admiral Branson that it may not recognize some of the courses taught at the Academy for command advancement calling the school a fringe academy and citing the Omega Research and Genetic Experimentation as unsavory and unacceptable.
Nicole lost her temper and snapped, "What if we ceded from the Federation!"
The civil servant laughed. Vincent gasped. A collective gasp could be felt around the entire colony.
The comment back, "You would not last a week without Federation support..."
Nicole looked at Vincent, "How long could we last?"
Vincent looked at Nicole, "I have no idea. The Replicators run on the Geo-thermal core which is accelarated by the presence of dormant Omega. I believe they would run for virtually all eternity."
Nicole looked at Vincent, "Ever wanted to be president?"
Vincent laughed, "Admiral Hunt would be the President. I would simply remain the governor."
Nicole smiled, "The damn Federation has foresaken us for the last time. If we don't have food by Friday, we are formally ceceding from the Federation. Prepare a referendum."
Vincent smiled, suddenly ever so confident, "As you wish, Vice Admiral. The staff will be informed immediately."
"The people will decide.", Nicole smiled, suddenly feeling back in charge.
