Nicole woke up and walked to the window in the Governor's Mansion. She was excited to see the sun but instead she saw the village of Whitechapel and the downtown of Camelot changed. The buildings looked like something out of old England. It was as though the buildings themselves had been altered.
Nicole immediately contacted the station to run a full scan of the community of Whitechapel and of all structures produced by the industrial replication equipment. Nicole asked for a meeting with Vincent and Acrylos.
Acrylos Teero was very quiet during the briefing to the senior management. Nicole looked at her Bajoran friend, "What is going on?"
Acrylos looked at Nicole, "Industrial replicators are basically transporters or holo deck creators which merge the visual creations of a holo deck and the energy to matter conversion that occurs in a transporter. These complex calculations need to be made very quickly. The computers that were available when we wanted to move this process forward out of the colonization techniques of Admiral William Hunt were not capable of the matter conversion on such a grand scale. We needed a way to improve the system."
"What did you do?", Vincent snapped.
"In 2365, nearly 30 years ago, Lt. Commander Geordhi Laforge of the Starship Enterprise challenged the computer to create a Holmesian Villian worthy of challenging Commander Data in a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The result was Dr.Morisrty but more than that, the result was a holo deck replicator subroutine capable of rethinking as it created. The Moriarty subroutine was written into the industrial replicators so that if the replicators were not capable of recreating the structures requested, the replicator itself would make the adjustment.", Acrylos explained.
"And what the hell does this have to do with the structures here on the colony?", Nicole was more serious now.
"It appears that Moriarty himself was part of the subroutine, Nicole. He is trying to come out and is manipulating our Camelot to look like his London. He is trying to come back.", Acrylos offered his theory.
"What does this mean?", Tan interrupted.
"The structural changes are like a virus in the replication. James, Xact and I will begin to write a patch that will restore the structures. For the colonists, it will business as usual.", Acrylos offered.
"The problem now is the mystery of Moriarty. In all likelihood the holo creation is loose in the colony and will need capture. Until that time, anything that uses holo technology or replication poses a hazard to the potential appearance of the sociopath.", Acrylos offered.
"I will inform Robert immediately and we need to get Christine to get the word to the citizens. The risk is very real.", Nicole ordered. She was finally acting like a Governor.
The mission, Jack the Ripper was a bit of a joke, a play on Jack Frost - the extreme cold of the colony taking a life and a reference to the serial killer of Eath's history. Criminals, fictional or real in Earth's history now pose a real danger to the colonists. Dr. Moriarty is loose and there is no Holmes here to catch him.
This is up to the colonists and hardly elementary, my dear Watson.
