Deveniss and Tan had actually become fast friends. Tan hated the Federation Overseer at first but soon came to understand that the Selayan had lost his position with the Epsilon Force because of his nature.
Deveniss was already an elderly person when he began to serve with the Epsilon Force in the Delta Quadrant and would often be found sleeping on Starbase Frontier and not performing his duties especially after accepting the role of Deputy Commander in Chief. Deveniss was a misunderstood soul.
Commodore Tan could understand that more than anyone. The Hierarchy Clanner was the only one of his kind in the Alpha Quadrant and without his clan to give him orders, he was always thought of as a nobody. He knew of Deveniss in his past having served on a station in the Federation Elite Force. Tan would soon be sharing stories with his new friend and spending time with both Deveniss and Summer.
The old Selayan finally had to ask the question, "The Betazoid people are legendary lovers. Their prowess in the boudoir is well known throughout the universe. The Hierarchy are cloners who do not have any reproductive organs. How does it work?"
Tan chuckled, "I can know love. Love is more than physical. I can share time with my Summer."
Deveniss still looked puzzled. Tan could see the lost thoughts in his head. He held up his hand to show the pudgy fingers of the Hierarchy clanners, "If you don't have the right parts, improvise."
Tan wiggled his fingers. Deveniss chuckled. He raised his clawed hand and thought about Selayan reproduction. Like the snakes of Earth, the male would expel his reproductive juices on the eggs laid outside the body. There was not great lovemaking. There was no great romance. Deveniss had watched Summer and Tan in their dance of love. He was both amazed and jealous.
Deveniss was in the Tavern on Starbase 756 when he saw Saehir Madison dressed in a stunning green dress. The Romulan put her arms around Richard Madison, her Executive Officer and tried to give him a kiss. Madison pushed her away, "No thank you, Romulan!", he snapped.
Saehir had just thrown herself at Richard, in front of everyone. She wanted to start to cry but she was Romulan. She was not about to do that in front of everyone. She plunked down on the chair next to Deveniss trying to compose herself, "Order me a drink, Federation!"
Deveniss did not like her tone but he complied. Saehir looked at the Federation Observer, "All of these men are the same. I should have stayed on Romulus."
"The same how?", Deveniss looked at Commander Marrus.
"They are bound by duty. They just want to fly around in ships and do their jobs. None of them want romance or even just sex for that matter. They serve only their ship.", Saehir complained.
"As a Romulan and a cousin of the Vulcan people, you should uderstand duty as good as anyone.", Deveniss observed.
"I left Romulus to be here. I saw what this world, what the King's Fleet and its service could offer. I saw Vincent and Zoe at the Gala Events. I have seen Nicole and Penny or Rosalie or whomever. These are the leaders of this group and they can still have a personal life. They can have it all.", Saehir looked at the Selayan and swallowed the whole glass.
"Maybe its not a human you should be looking for.", Deveniss laid his cards on the table.
"What can you offer me old man?", Saehir looked at Deveniss.
"You don't even have the right parts.", Saehir mocked the old man.
Deveniss was hurt by the harsh words of the Romulan. He turned to his drink and took a sip. Saehir turned around. She put her arm around the Selayan, "Its not your fault."
Deveniss thought of Tan and his demonstration with his fingers. He looked at Saehir, "If you ain't got it on the hips, you better have it on the fingertips."
Saehir was stunned. She looked at the clawed hand of the Selayan and suddenly she was very intrigued. She thought about that trying to get inside her. She literally tingled inside.
Deveniss was terrified. What if she said yes... Saehir looked at her drink and slowly interlaced her fingers inside the Selayan's. Deveniss' old heart started to beat very hard. He swallowed hard, "I have a forked tongue."
Saehir thought of the potential of either side of the tongue rubbing along her nearly human genetalia. She was literally wet with the possibility.
"Do you have quarters on the station, Rear Admiral?", Saehir looked at Deveniss.
The old man followed Saehir to his quarters. He thought about Tan and Summer and their stories of their first time on Station Destiny. Deveniss was literally scared like a young man about to lose his virginity. What if he hurt Saehir? What if his clawed finger cut her somehow... down there?
Selayans are notorious sleepers. They have been known to sleep well into the afternoon. Tan actually liked the fact that Federation Observer was not around much so he could run the station as he saw fit. When Deveniss did not appear until early in the afternoon, Tan was not even worried.
Commodore Tan was surprised with the positive demeanor of the grumpy Deveniss. Tan and Deveniss shared a smile as Summer came over to the pair, "All station systems are in tip top shape."
Saehir Marrus emerged from the quarters of Rear Admiral Deveniss of Selay trying to fix her hair and put her shoes. She looked at Tan believing the corridor would be empty this late in the afternoon.
Tan looked at Deveniss, "You ol' dog!!"
Deveniss looked at Tan, "The Selayan people owe their heritage to the snake family. It is the Antcans who resemble the dogs of Earth."
Summer burst out laughing. Deveniss had totally missed the reference. Tan too could not help but chuckle.
Commander Richard Madison came in dressed in full uniform and looked at Marrus, "The Diana is prepared to depart, Commander."
"Thank you, Madison.", Marrus had gathered her wits about her.
The pair started to walk towards the turbo lift. Marrus snapped, "Ahhh, what the hell?!?"
She ran back and kissed Deveniss first on the snout and then on the lips, "I will be back for more, big D."
Deveniss felt his heart flutter. It was a feeling he had never to known before. What was this new feeling? How was he going to deal with it?
Tan put his arm around his new friend's shoulder, "You can teach an old dog new tricks after all."
Summer burst out laughing when Deveniss still looked so puzzled by the Antican reference. His naivete was so funny.
Tan followed Summer leaving Deveniss to watch the IRW Princess Diana leave Starbase 756 for its manouevers. The old man looked at the ship named for a princess with his new princess on board.
