In 1941, Nazi and SS Death Squads declared the Jewish People responsible for the problems of Germany. With days, 50000 Jews are murdered. Within weeks, a million Jews are rounded up for deportation or death. Over the next four years 6 million Jews are eradicated off the planet in one of the great tragedies in the history of the universe. It should have served as a lesson for all worlds.
Yet in the 24th century, the Cardassian Union invaded and occupied Bajor killing millions in yet another horrible genicide. The colonists were at Ephyra. The Tanmesad once served the Union. We all know the horrors.
As I sit to write the evening's editorial, I am pondering these great events as I review the week's debate in the legislature of Omega Prime and even over heard conversations between First Lady T'Ken and Major Tanus. There is much debate over the Tacet Syndrome refugees. T'Ken was over heard shouting at Major Tanus to simply eliminate the problem. Round up the mouthless refugees and execute them. There is no way of knowing who amongst them would be willing to kill another to restore their appearance and their speech. There is no way of knowing who amongst of them would take a child and steal the damaged DNA structure to repair their children. Tanus is a marine. Tanus is a Gorn. He can understand this approach.
Tanus however has been groomed under great humanists from Admiral Tim Veltkamp and Admiral Gwena Max to the unifying force that is Nicole Branson. He was accepted on board the USS Washington even though the Gorn Hegemony sided with the Dominion and even with the Breen. He was the outsider. People feared him.
He has a very tough choice to make. Keep the refugees and put his citizens at risk or commit an atrocity that would rival Germany or the Cardassians.
And he thought being a marine was tough... Dragons may bring the fire but politics will light a fire under your ass...
