The original goal of the retreating Imperials was to create the Multiverse Rift in order to link the remaining Sith Apprentice, Lady Thylara with a malevolent Sith Lord of the past and to use this Rule of Two pairing to retake the galaxy from the New Republic. It was Thylara who betrayed the program put forth by her after learning about its links to the past and the possibility of saving her mother, the lost Jedi Master Thessa Valero.
Darth Varno listened to the ShockTrooper Commander 2395-1 describe the way the Multiverse Rift was preached to the troopers during nightly propaganda broadcasts. They were definitely believers. They were indoctrinated to be.
Varno and Admiral Rence Devreon of the Imperial Navy were feverishly looking for Emperor Amero Devreon to complete their triumvirate of power but Varno had a new target now.
What if the Sith legends were right? What if they could find a Multiverse Rift activated Sith Lord to serve as the Master for Darth Varno. The Cardassian could insert himself into the mythology of his clones. He had already bastardized the reality by connect multiple timelines and even blurring the timeline here because many of the colonists who served with the King’s Fleet Colonization Group see the year as 2396 not the 2395 which current shows on the Star Calendar.
Lady Thylara clearly remembers interactions with Emperor Palpatine after his death at Endor. She remembers Palpatine providing her with the Chiss DNA designed to activate dormant parts of her Takadonian brain in order to improve tactical analysis, something that Palpatine saw in Vader’s successor, the Grand Admiral Thrawn. This blurring is believed to have affected both timelines as the Federation timeline appears to have lost a year to 2395. The trouble is very few in the reality can link to the temporal distortion.
Varno was stunned to learn that Gallitep Commanding Officer Gul Dar’Heel may have had contact with the dark soul. It was part of Cardassian Lore that his brutality came from a dark place. Varno was stunned to learn that Dar’Heel had been visited by someone who claimed to come from the distant past, wielded a sword and could shoot red fireworks from his fingers. The Gallitep Labour Camp was a place of horrible darkness. Could this visitor have been a Sith Lord?
Varno tried to use it to explain the fascination with dark armour and with evil amongst the Obsidian Order. The Sith also referred to themselves as an Order. There was a darkness about those connections. There was no way to speak to Dar’Heel anymore. The Bajorans had taken care of that but he could speak to Thessa Valero. She was already fighting the good fight back in the time of the occupation. Perhaps it is why she took up arms against the Cardassians, she knew that they had been influenced by the Sith.
Varno knew there was a darkness in the genealogy of Lady Thylara. Despite her recent revelations, the Sith Lord had been touched by the Dark Side. Varno also knew that Thessa Valero was sent to spy on Emperor Palpatine and got so deep undercover that she had a sexual relationship with the Emperor. There is a darkness within.
Varno learned from Admiral Rence Devreon that the Multiverse Rift was opened using that darkness so this ancient Sith Lord may be along that genealogical line. This was a perfect tool. This could be used to track the Sith Lord. Varno was in the watchtower of Lakaria Courascant when he made his first discovery of a potential signal in the region, on Cardassia IV.
The Sith Lord may exist and if he had an affinity for the Cardassians he first helped during the occupation, Darth Varno may have found his master. He laughed out loud at the thought of using his Clone Army to move on Cardassia Prime with this Dark Lord at his side. It was all coming together.
Admiral Devreon also saw this as an opportunity to have his power base restored. Rence could stand with the Sith Lords and established the Imperial Cardassian Union as the New Empire. Princess Leia Organa Solo could have her new Republic, he would have his New Empire.
