If you were about to commit one of the great attrocities in recent Star Fleet history, what would you do? The simple rule of thumb is cause a great distraction and while people are focused on the distraction, commit the attrocity in near silence.
Admiral Tim Velkamp had been promising a visit to the Omega Colony for a long time, the launch facility, the gated community and the business hub all bare his name. He is seen as the heroic leader who brought a "home" to the colonists when few would. He is seen as the very symbol in the image of Cardassian children running with Bajoran Children up to the gates of James Kirk Elementary. To the general populace, it was like a visit from a rock star.
To the Omega News Network, the visit brought hope of changes at the top. Christine T'Nley had spent the last several months chastising the choice of Rear Admiral Nicole Branson to lead the colony and despite her successes including the expansion from simply an Academy town to two major cities, the Network continues to call for her head. Christine was on the launch pad when Veltkamp exited the craft. She was going to shove a microphone in his face and get him to speak on the issue whether he liked it or not.
Commander Martin Evans had established a near perfect security parameter. He was very good at his job. Sgt. Leo walked behind Admiral Veltkamp as he exited the craft. Nicole and Vincent stood on the red carpet below. It was a powerful scene, like the visit from a pope back on Earth. There were many cheers from the crowd as the Admiral left the steps of the craft.
The bolt of phaser light came in a scatter as Admiral Veltkamp crumpled to the ground, his uniform still smoking as the phaser had blasted through his shoulder. Chaos filled the scene. Nicole rushed over to Leo and Veltkamp and ordered the beam out to the Dr. Leonard McCoy Teaching Hospital.
Vincent coordinated the scene. No one was to leave. The Omega Colony had to discover how this had occurred. Who shot Admiral Tim Veltkamp?
The scene remained sheer and utter chaos. There were many dignitaries on the ground including Lt. Commander Aloysius Storm. The skies were filled with ships but few had command staff aboard.
Just as the scene began to return to normal, the sky lit up like a candle.
Oh my god!! The Station.
Sigma Station Alpha had been destroyed.
The colony scrambled whatever shuttles it had and whatever pilots it had to get the crews back to their ships. The truth is it was too late. Pieces of Sigma Station Alpha rained down across the country side. The great station, home of the now legendary Covington Conference that had paved the way for Vorta'Rome down here and for improvements in the Romulan - Federation Relationship was now just dust.
Vincent estimated the loss of life as nearly 3000, the station had dwindled in staff recently but the extensive loss of life will be felt deeply here on the Colony. Most service men and women kept their families here so their children could have a more normal life style. 3000 families affected is a horror the colony could ill afford.
Nicole was with Tim when the media showed up. They should have been clammering for an update to his care but instead, Christine and the hordes were after Nicole for the destruction of the station. She had not been on the compound when the sky lit up. She did not know. The Omega News Network was relentless attacking her from all sides about failure to protect the station and how she was going to protect the colony. Nicole was frantic and not handling it well. This has been a horrid day.
Veltkamp had been shot under her command and now Sigma Station Alpha had been destroyed in front of everyone. Christine was screaming for retaliation against the Romulans when T'Liama walked in to catch up to Nicole. Christine shoved a mic in the face of the Romulan screaming for answers about the Romulan attack on Sigma Station Alpha.
T'Liama looked puzzled, "The Romulans would not attack a station directly above their own Omega Research Facility. It would be foolish."
The whole congregation of staff now looked puzzled. If not the Romulans, then who? And furthermore, who shot Tim Veltkamp and how are the two related?
The Omega Colony has a new mission....
To find out
Who shot Tim Veltkamp?Find that out and you will find out who destroyed Sigma Station Alpha.
